Play Games for Gift Cards: Which Ones You Can Actually Get

Play games for gift cards long enough and the redeemable list turns out to be shorter than the marketing suggests. On most reward platforms it narrows to a handful of categories: major retailers, app store credit, gaming storefronts, everyday spend, and open-loop prepaid cards.

Here's what each is good for, and which one to aim at depending on how you plan to spend it.

What you get when you play games for gift cards

Amazon

The default choice and the most flexible one on the list. Anything you'd have bought anyway can be paid for with it, which makes it the safe pick if you don't know yet what you want. It's also the card people most often sit on and forget, so treat it as a spending plan rather than a savings account.

Google Play and Apple

Store credit is the natural loop when the rewards came from mobile games in the first place. It covers in-app purchases, subscriptions, and paid apps. If you already spend on mobile, this is the card that offsets an existing cost instead of creating a new one.

Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox

Gaming storefront credit stretches further than retail credit during sale seasons. Timing matters more here than with any other card — the same balance buys noticeably more in a seasonal sale than it does in a quiet month.

Roblox

Worth listing separately because it's what most younger players are actually after, and because Robux is one of the few rewards a parent can hand over without it turning into a real-money purchase conversation.

Everyday spend

Starbucks, DoorDash, Uber Eats, Target, Walmart. These quietly do the most work, because they replace spending you had planned for this week anyway. Less exciting than a game store balance, more useful.

Visa

The closest thing to cash on the list, accepted almost anywhere, which is the point. It's also the one to read the terms on, since prepaid cards vary more than branded store cards do.

Picking one you'll actually use

The trap is choosing by reward size instead of by fit. A card for a store you rarely visit sits unused, which makes it worth less to you than a smaller balance somewhere you shop weekly.
